Origin and Interesting Facts

Terminalia belerica, also known as Beleric Myrobalan, is a species of plant from the family Combretaceae, native to various parts of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The use of Terminalia belerica dates back thousands of years and is widespread in various cultures and traditions.

The plant is considered one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional Indian healing art, and has been used in healing for over 3,000 years. The ancient texts of Ayurvedic narratives, such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita, describe the use of Terminalia belerica as a tonic for the digestive system and to support liver function.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Bibhitaki is called "Ba Yue Zha" and is used to treat ailments such as cough, asthma, and chest pain.

Bibhitaki is also widely used in Unani medicine, a traditional form of medicine prevalent in the Islamic world. Unani medicine combines Ayurvedic and Greek methods and uses Terminalia belerica to treat diabetes, diarrhea, and as a detoxifying agent.

Bibhitaki is a valuable component of Triphala, an Ayurvedic remedy consisting of 3 components with incredible effects and a very broad spectrum of action.

The 3 components are Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amalaki and are mixed in a 1:1:1 ratio.
